HUT to HUT 
Refugio Frey - Jakob

This program is perfect for backcountry skiers looking for a multi-day traverse that combines challenging ascents, thrilling descents, and immersive mountain hut experiences. You'll begin at Refugio Frey, renowned for its steep couloirs and granite towers, before crossing the breathtaking Rucaco Valley to Refugio Jakob, surrounded by vast alpine terrain. Each day offers a mix of technical skiing, route-finding, and rewarding turns, making it an unforgettable adventure for experienced ski tourers.

Bariloche’s mountain huts (refugios) are special for their stunning locations in the heart of Patagonia’s wilderness, offering breathtaking alpine views and direct access to world-class skiing and mountaineering terrain. These rustic yet cozy retreats combine a rich mountaineering history with a warm, communal atmosphere where adventurers can relax, share stories, and enjoy home-cooked meals. The huts provide a unique mix of accessibility and remote adventure, making them a key part of the backcountry experience in the region.

Day 1 - Arrival in Bariloche:

Meet at Bariloche Airport and transfer to your hotel. We’ll check all equipment, review the itinerary, and ensure everyone is ready for the adventure ahead.

Day 2 - Catedral backcountry access 

Morning pick-up and transfer to catedral ski resort. From the top of the mountain we can gain access to the best off piste terrain. In between granite towards and unique gullies we can use this day to check the gear on . Also is a good warm up for the comings days.

Day 3 - Ski Tour to Refugio Frey & Afternoon Laps:

After breakfast, we pick you up at your hotel (8:30 AM) and drive to Cerro Catedral. We take the ski lifts to the ridgeline, where our journey begins. From here, we skin towards Refugio Frey, arriving after about three hours. After lunch at the hut, we take advantage of the remaining daylight for some ski laps around Laguna Toncek. We end the day with dinner and rest at the hut.​ Vertical Gain: 350m (1148 ft) | Duration: ~3 hours ascent + afternoon skiing

Day 4 - Full Ski Day in Frey’s Legendary Terrain:

An early start to explore the steep chutes and couloirs surrounding Laguna Toncek. We’ll choose the best descents based on snow conditions, maximizing our time in the alpine. We can return to the hut for lunch or stay out for a mountain picnic. After a full day of skiing, we return to the refuge for an evening of wine, local beer, and a well-earned meal. Vertical Gain: 1000-1500m (3200-4921 ft) | All-day ski touring

Day 5 - Traverse from Frey to Jakob Hut:

After a relaxed breakfast, we begin our traverse westward along the Catedral Ridge, dropping into the stunning Rucaco Valley. A mix of skinning and skiing brings us to Laguna San Martín and finally Refugio Jakob. Once at the hut, we explore the surrounding terrain for additional turns before settling in for the night. Vertical Gain: 1000m (3280 ft) | Max Altitude: 2200m (7217 ft) | Duration: 3-4 hours ascent + afternoon skiing

Day 6 - Morning Ski & Return to Bariloche:

We start the day with a final ski session, choosing from the nearby peaks for a last round of fresh turns. After packing up, we begin our descent back to Bariloche via one of the several possible routes. By late afternoon, we arrive in town and check into the hotel. The trip wraps up with a celebratory dinner to relive the best moments of the adventure. Late flight return to home or next morning pick-up and transfer to Bariloche Airport. End of the trip.
